Born in Montana, Al Maul now lives and performs in the Vail Valley, Colorado. Growing up with ranch work, wilderness guiding and wildland firefighting gave Al a gritty appreciation for the natural world, and how wild places shape and sustain people and community. His musical influences are too many to name but include Gregory Alan Isakov, Colter Wall and John Prine.
Through past years Maul has honed his act in the taverns, coffee houses, and ski resorts of the Colorado high country. Performing both solo and alongside other acts, he has grown a regional following. Enough so, that the county in which he resides commissioned him to write an anthem that represented the storied county. 'Eagle County' was the result and released in July '23.
In March ’22 Maul released his first album titled 'The Wandering.' Recorded at Stout Studios in Fort Collins it features 11 tracks including violin, mandolin, vocal harmonies, bass, percussion ,and glowing Gibson 335 phrasing. Al’s second LP –derived from a large catalogue of unreleased work—is scheduled for 2026 release.
Though writing, rehearsing and performing take up most of his time, Maul is an avid hockey player, yogi, and outdoor enthusiast.
